Conventions Of A Trailer
  • What I expect to see in a teaser trailer is a kind of storyline of the film to give you a brief idea what its about but you don't want it to give to much away cos then it will make you want to go and watch it.

  • Teaser trailers differ within different genres for example a rom-com trailer is more likely to give the storyline away a bit more than what a horror would, this is because in some horror trailers its kind of a mystery to what is happening to people or who i killing people. Also different genres have different convention like in a horror you would expect to see people being killed where as in a dance flick you would expect to see dance
  • In a teaser trailer there will always be shots from the film, and it also tells you the certificate of the film and when the film will be out in cinema. In some teaser trailers you expect to hear a voice over, and a teaser trailer is usually no longer than 2 minutes long.
Media Language
  • At the start of the trailer its starts with establishing shots of the area of where the house is hes doing the exorcism at, it then cuts to a mid shot of the girls brother talking to the priest while he is sat in the car, it then cuts to a shot of the house and then a shot of him meeting her dad then a shot of the girl upset. It then cuts to a shot of them doing some sort of exorcism. Gradually as the trailer goes on the girl gets more and more possessed, there is a shot where she gets hold of the camera before she murders that cat. As they are doing the exorcism it cuts to a scary face with a red tint to it which i presume is the demon that is possessing the young girl. At the end of the trailer she jumps toward the camera which really makes you jump. It then cuts to them running toward the fire very quickly. The cuts are very quick which in a way drums the images into your head.

  • At the start of the trailer during the establishing shots theirs a voice over from the priest explaining where he is going and what he expects to find while he is there. During the shots of the possessed girl in the film there is a mixture of diegetic and non diegetic sound, non diegetic being the soundtrack which is parallel sound as it goes with whats going on, the diegetic sound being the screaming and panicing which is on screen sound and at some parts in the trailer off screen, there is also a voice over on some of the title shots in the trailer which is non diegetic.
  • Editing is used in the trailer to show the girl at different stages of her being possessed, the more the demon takes over her the faster the edit transitions which shows panic and makes it scary and jumpy.
  • The setting in the trailer is shown in various establishing shots throughout the trailer, you can tell straight away that it is a horror from the start of the trailer. Also the setting in the trailer suggests its going to be a horror
Audience
  • The audience for the film will be teenagers and people that enjoy watching horror films. the film is rated a 15 which sometimes puts adults off watching it because they wont think its very scary, although adults that enjoyed the film the exorcist might feel the need to come and see it as it is along the same storyline.

Representation
  • The possessed girl in the trailer is represented as dangerous, scary and very out of control, the priest wanting to help her is seen as helpless in the trailer as everything he does seems to just make the girl even worse. her father who is shown briefly in the trailer is shown as concerned and upset at how unwell his daughter is.

Narrative
  • The story is about a young girl who gets possessed by a demon, as the demon takes over her she gets worse and worse, the priest who comes to help her realise that this is going to be a lot harder than it looks. Eventually she sets out the kill the people trying to help her. This follows todorovs narrative theory with the equilibrium, disruption, peaks and troughs, the climax then the equilibrium restored.
  • Looking at the trailer you can tell the film is closed structured, it is also multistrand because there is more than one main character in the film.
  • It will be a passive audience as they wont really have to think about the film they just sit and watch it. I think for the socio economic grouping students will be most likely to watch it as it targets towards teenagers.

  • The genre of the film is Horror.
  • You can tell this is the genre of the film because of the setting the lighting and colours that are used in the trailer. The majority of horror film trailers have a really eerie creepy soundtrack which also gives it away.

Research and Planning: Analysis of Teaser Trailer

For my research I did my analysis on the the teaser trailer on the film 'Paranormal Activity'. The film was a horror, which we analyzed as it match the genre of our teaser trailer:

Media Language

Sound

  • Music is playing throughout the trailer as it is a dull sound which sounds like thunder outside
  • There is also a non-diegetic sound of a voice over narrative introducing the film
  • There is also diegetic sounds of the screaming crowds in the audience
  • There is the characters speaking over the top of the music playing in the background
  • there is also bangs playing in the film to show that something is happening
Cinematography

  • For the first glimpse of the film, the shot is a long show of a line of people queuing up to see the film at the cinemas.
  • Which then changes to a low angle of the people all sitting down
  • the camera then flashes to different angles of the people sat in the cinema
  • the trailer then flashes to the back of the cinema so that you can still see the audiences heads while the film is playing.
  • The film starts off to a high angle of a woman sat on a chair talking to another man
  • The shot then changes to the man talking to the camera which he is holding to the mirror
  • It then changes to the woman again sat on the chair and then to the audience faces to see there reactions
  • The shot then changes to show the man talking to the camera again while e is walking into the bedroom
  • Which then leads to a conversation between the man and the woman
  • Next the trailer changes back to the audience to show there faces
  • The trailer then jumps through a couple of scenes to show the audience the house, the windows stairs and doors
  • I then shows a medium long shot of two of the characters in bed with the camera in the corner of the room in night vision
  • it then shows the audience the top of the stairs and the light swinging in night vision
  • The scene then changes to the audiences faces and shows that they are scared
  • It then shows at a high angle the floor of the house with all white powder on the floor which had been moved
  • It then changes to the night vision again to show the two people in bed again but with something blowing underneath the covers and then the door slamming
  • I then shows one of the audiences faces in a close up
  • Then shows a quotation of what someone has said
  • then shows the womans side of her stomach to show teeth marks in her side
  • Then another quotation
  • It then shows the audience again screaming
  • it then has a voice over of the woman saying whats happening to me as there is the slogan coming up in the screen
  • Then just has flashes of the audiences faces all screaming
  • The final shot shows the man being thrown across the room into the camera
Editing
  • At the beginning of the trailer it has straight cuts of the audiences sitting in their seats
  • Then shows a zoom in of the audience in the other side of the room
  • Then has a fade out and a fade in to introduce the film when it is starting
  • It then has three more straight cuts
  • then a fade out of the audience again
  • There is again 5 more straight cuts of different parts of the film
  • Then a fade out of the woman and man in bed
  • There is then 5 more straight cuts of the audience and the film
  • Then three zoom in and outs of the audience and the film
  • then for the rest of the teaser trailer there is straight cuts of the film and the audiences expressions
Mise-En-Scene

  • At the beginning of the trailer the setting in the street with the characters and then them in the cinemas
  • The next part is about the film and the two characters wearing casual clothes as there in there own houses
  • Every scene there is a camera which is filming the events that happen in the film
  • All the scenes are set in the house
Narrative

The narrative of this film trailer is a horror. You can tell this by the storyline on the teaser trailer. The teaser trailer shows that it is about two people in a house and there being tormented by something else in there. You can tell this by the way the two scream and the banging and the woman being dragged out of bed.

Representation

I think the representation in this teaser trailer will be aimed more at more teenagers as I think that it will appeal more for them to watch it in the cinema. I think the audience in the trailer are mostly teenagers. The way the two characters and in the film show that there is a romance between the two.

Audience
  • the audience of this film is passive
  • the socio-economic grouping is E for this film
  • The psychographics for this film is for people who are being sociable. The film is for people who like horrors.
  • the age group for this film I think will be more for teenagers up to the ages of 25. I don't think people in more high levels of grouping would want to watch this film
  • the audience for this film I think will be both genders.
Genre

The genre of this teaser trailer is horror. It is a horror about a spirit in someones house. The film is about a couple in a house and there is a spirit haunting the.

Research and Planning: Change of Ideas

In today's lesson in our group we have decided to change our idea to horror instead of a dance spoof. As we thought that it would be too difficult to make a dance film as it would be hard to create the music and find actors that were able to dance.

Research and Planning: My Septembers Podcast And Photoshop Recap

This was my podcast for September on what I had done that month, I created it on I-movie to show the different things that I had learned.

For my Photoshop Recap we made a film poster on the type of genre we were making our teaser trailer on, which was dance. I cut around 5 silhouette ballet dancers which were posing in different dance positions. Above then I added the name of the fillm which was called 'Dance' which I did in capital letters and the colour white, which I then added a drop shadow to it so that the words stood out. Above the name O cut around a picture which I used for the main photo on the poster. the picture was of another dance but in colour. It shown the dancer posing in a different type of dance style. Around the main picture was two other pictures of two different men which were faded out to show they wernt was important as the other picture. The poster shown the storyline by, two different styles of dance as the main storyline but also shown a romance between the main character and the two other characters placed around her.

Research and Planning: The Pitch

This is my pitch and these are my individual ideas before I formed my group. Which then this helped me decide who I wanted to work in my group with as we all had the similar type of ideas

Research and Planning: Certificates

We decided to set our regulations to either a 12A or a 15 certificate. We are unsure at the moment, this is because:

We decided on a 12A certificate because:
  •  In our film there may be brief sex scenes but will be discreetly portrayed, which still not be suitable for young children under the age of 12
  • Also there may be brief conflict within the film which may be disturbing for children under the age of 12
  • Moderate language is allowed. But in our film there will be the use of strong language
We decided on a 15 certificate because:
  • The violence will be strong but not strong for the certificate to become an 18, there will be no gory images shown.
  • There may be frequent use of strong language, but will not be aggressive or repeated throughout the film
  •  Drug taking may be shown within our film, but will not promote or encourage drug misuse

Research & planning: The Test

The clip we made was about a college boy who was being stalked by another boy. The test was to help our group get to know each other and for us to be able to work in groups. I also learned how to use I-Movie  to help us upload, cut, change and edit the clip. I was really happy with our clips as there were many faults that occurred within it. For one we had problems with camera and it didn't record half of our filming, so had to carry on the filming on different days, which was a problem as we were wearing different clothes. Also we suffered problems with the I-Movie program as we had problems with the editing, as we created a fade out, to show the different days within the clip, but there was a loud noise that was playing during the fade out which then continued throughout the rest of the clip. Also we could not find any music which could link up to to match the type of genre of the clip, only a remix Halloween sound. Another problem we occurred was that there was a few jumps within the clip where we stopped the camera and moved it but then the actor wasn't in the same place, so we tried to cover it with an transition which then we was unable to do as the clip we tried to cut out was then to short for the transitions to take place.

Research and Planning: Genre research

I am going to do some research into the different type of genres to give me an idea of what types of genres there is for me to choose out off, for me to do my coursework, which will consist of a teaser trailer, poster and a magazine cover. This will help me by it will able me to see which genre will be capable for my to do in the area around me. The genre I am considering is horror or action but I am uncertain at the moment.

In my research and planning I am going to look at the following genres:

Horror

In horrors there mostly set in deserted areas where there is nobody there tho help to create suspense and create the horror to the film, also the killer is mostly the person you least expect it to be which leaves the viewer guessing the whole way through the film. I researched into this horror images as it also creates a mystery to the viewers. The film was called Eden lake and it shows the woman in colour to show her facial expressions to show she is scared. The picture shows the woman is hiding from the people behind here, this makes the audience want to watch it as it creates mystery to the fill as the four people are in black, like a silhouette to hide there identity.

Action

In action films there are most commonly known for the none stop thrill within the film, they always aim to keep the audience on the edge of their seat. There is normally heroes in the film where they have to set out to save the city or the world. There is mostly in many films 'bad guys' who there heroes have to save. In I Am Legend image it shows he hero the size of the picture to show that he is the main character in the film These films include I Am Legend and films like James Bond.

Comedy

In comedy films they usual shown by the physical side of the actors, by there running around and falling over creating humor to the audience by them laughing at the characters. The can also create humor by the verbal side, the things the characters say, for example Pineapple Express is both physical and verbal to create the humour in the film. Most comedies can be different as they don't need to be along the same lines to be comical. Other comedy films are for example Superbad and Step Brothers.

Dance

In dance films they are ost commonly known for the dance routines that are put together.
They normally also have other storylines goin along side of the film, the most common one is a romance. Dance films are mostly always stereotypical storylines. for example, Step Up, two different social background being brought together with different dance ctyles and performing in a compertition.
